Steve Jobs Has Died

Between Sal and I, we talked about who should write this piece. It was decided that I should do so.

He's dead!

For a long time (literally) in my life, from my elementary school days up until now, I’ve had a disdain toward Apple-brand computers. I’ve gone into it a few times on the show (Mike & Sal), and won’t do so again. As I got older, I learned more about technology, I learned more about Apple in general as a company. I then learned about Steve Jobs, his work in the computer field, making graphical user interfaces (GUI) mainstream in the computer world. The advances he made were revolutionary, no doubt… but the way he conducted his business and treated competitors was my biggest sticking point with him.

Needless to say, he was a complete and utter asshole. For those who have seen the 1999 made-for-TV movie “Pirates of Silicon Valley”, that will show you a bit of how Jobs treated his competitors and even his own employees. While everyone will praise him and hold him as the highest and most almighty, I will surely not do so. He was a piece of garbage of a human being as far as I’m concerned and I hope his soul rots for the way he’s treated people.

As recently as the past few months, even though Steve was no longer the offical ‘CEO’, Apple still had ‘Steve’ written all over it with the way they handled business. In many countries around the world, Apple took Samsung to court for allegedly infriging on their iPhone/iPad patents. They claimed that Samsung’s ‘Galaxy S’ smartphones and ‘Galaxy Tab’ tablet were too close in terms of looks to the iPhone and iPad, respectively. So what did they do? They went to different countries around the world and sued Samsung, forcing them to stop sales of the Galaxy smartphones and tablets. One country they did this in successfully was Germany. Hey, Apple… whatever happened to ‘healthy competition’? Sure, the UI for the Galaxy S phones may have been similar to your precious iPhone, but Samsung innovated to make their phone different. Having a better camera, better technology in the phone and not to mention different versions of the phone could obviously tell you that Samsung was not trying to outright copy the iPhone. As for the Galaxy Tab, there are only so many ways to make a tablet in this day and age with a minimalistic look. The UI is different, the platforms are different and the Galaxy Tab even has a different shape from the iPad. Get off of your damn pedestal.

I digress, however. I just gave one small example of how the company that Steve ran operates under bully tactics. I can list more, if you’d like… it would just prove my point even further. Actually, let me do one more, and this is a REALLY recent example… so recent, it happened YESTERDAY. At the iPhone 4S event, current CEO Tim Cook said the following… “Windows 7 — it took 20 weeks to reach 10 percent of the Windows install base. It took Lion two weeks.”

Really, Tim… I believe you and it’s definitely possible, WHEN YOUR MARKET SHARE IS 1/10th THAT OF MICROSOFT’S WINDOWS. Of course it will happen faster! Not to mention like the Neowin article said, online distribution of OS X Lion through the Apple App Store was the main way of getting it, not to mention that it’s also a LOT cheaper! So put those factors together and duh, it’s a no brainer, but it’s essentially comparing Apples to Oranges (no pun intended). Microsoft also has to deal with the corporate world which traditionally adopts new technology at a much slower rate than the consumer world. This was obviously not a fair comparison and shows you the lengths Apple will go through to deface competition.

I won’t drag this out any longer as I think I’ve said enough. The mark Steve Jobs left on the world of technology was in no doubt a positive one, as he helped contribute to the boom of the computing age, and to make smartphones a consumer item… but the negatives and dark sides of what he does to other people in my opinion far outweigh his contributions.

May you rot in hell, you overbearing cancer-ridden piece of trash. You got what you deserved in the end, good riddance.

Bounce Top Hit – Maroon 5: Moves Like Jagger

Every so often, I’ll make a post of a song I play on The Bounce that really strikes me as being awesome.

After not having heard a new song of theirs in a while, about 3 weeks ago they released a new song that totally kicks ass. Maroon 5 teamed up with Christina Aguilera to make this one possible. It’s called ‘Moves Like Jagger’ and it features a REALLY nice dance beat with the signature voice of Adam Levine leading the way. A little while into the song, Christina jumps in and drops her little verse which plays nicely to Adam’s lyrics. The whole song lyrically is very suggestive and the video pays homage to Mick Jagger and his moves very well. Mick even gave this song his blessing, if you were wondering.

This song is one of the power songs on The Bounce right now… and here’s the video for it (you might wanna make sure have some good speakers to really enjoy this one!)

The Legendary HFS returns… on FM and HD!

If you’ve lived in Baltimore in the past, oh I don’t know… 20 years, you might have heard of a certain radio station known as ‘HFS’. Since the 70s, 99.1 WHFS was known for being a rock station that had a passionate following with its progressive, free-form programming and playing new rock before anybody else. In the 90′s, WHFS expanded their brand with their annual ‘HFStival’ music festival which featured the hottest and best bands that rock music had to offer. In the early 2000′s the format was tweaked with, catering more to the younger demographic wanting to listen to acts such as Green Day. Old school listeners were turning away, as well with less underground rock being played on the station. It seemed that by 2005, it was getting a bit much for management at CBS Radio to take.

On January 12th 2005 at noon eastern, 99.1 WHFS was switched to a Tropical Latin music format and the station was rebranded as “El Zol 99.1 FM”. The main reason behind the format change was that WHFS had fallen to 22nd place in the ratings in Washington DC (its primary market). Public reaction was mainly outrage, with many outcrying over the loss of their rock station which had been around for 30 years at least. After several years, the HFS brand would be switched over to 105.7 as a part-time format before finally being shifted online and on HD Radio as ‘HFS2′.

Just yesterday (August 1st) at noon eastern, the WHFS brand returned to the FM dial at 97.5 in Baltimore. If you have an HD Radio, you can also tune in at 106.5 HD2.

Here’s the press release from CBS Radio -

The alternative rock music Baltimore grew up with and the personalities who made it popular return to the local airwaves when “HFS” debuts on Monday, August 1. The station will feature tracks from artists such as Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pearl Jam, Coldplay, Incubus, and Green Day, along with live and local hosts presenting the music. Listeners can tune-in to the station beginning at 12 Noon on WWMX 106.5 HD2 or 97.5 FM. The station will continue to be streamed online at www.hfs975.com or via the Radio.com app for a variety of mobile devices.

Bob Philips, Senior Vice President and Market Manager of CBS RADIO Baltimore said, “The music made popular by HFS has lived on long after the station went off the air. HFS has built a loyal following online and now those listeners can have more access than ever before as we bring back one of Baltimore’s well-known brands to radio stations across the dial.

“HD Radio Technology allows us to offer additional channels of programming alongside our over the air stations, and through a relationship with the owners of 97.5 we have this unique opportunity to expand the reach of the HFS programming. “

Personalities familiar to the “HFS” audience return to anchor the station’s programming, including Tim Virgin, who was first heard on the station in 2000, Gina Crash, a well-know HFS personality from the late 90’s, Jenn Marino, longtime radio personality Chris Emery, and Neci. Neci has the notoriety of being the only DJ who has hosted every HFStival—all nineteen of them.

HFS listeners will also hear “Loveline with Mike & Dr. Drew,” an entertaining and informative show offering advice to callers about relationships and addiction, weeknights from 10:00PM to Midnight.

Banana Crunch Cake

So, if you listened to last night’s Mike & Sal, you might have heard Sal mentioning that I (along with my lady, whom created this idea) would be sending him some Entenmann’s Banana Crunch Cakes via US Mail. Why would we do such a thing? Well, a few weeks ago on the show, Sal mentioned that he was in love with these cakes, but his local stores stopped carrying these varieties.

If you’re a regular listener of our show, you know I work in a supermarket, an A&P to be specific, and my lady works there with me. Last Sunday, we were walking to leave and we passed the Entenmann’s display. My lady stops there and begins looking, I ask what she’s looking for and she says ‘Banana Crunch Cakes’. She recounts to me the story from the show. I say ‘Ah! Yes!’. We ended up purchasing the last two, deciding we would send them to Sal. The week goes by, we inform Sal of the plan, he messes his pants with semen and mentions on last night’s show that he is truly happy with the arrival of the cakes.

Fast forward 14 hours, my lady and I decide to take another quick trip to A&P.. lo and behold, more Banana Crunch Cakes are in stock! My lady picks up another two and we decide to send one more to Sal and keep one for us, to see if these cakes live up to Sal’s hype. We sent off the package of cakes around 2pm and returned home to enjoy the crunch cake we saved for ourselves!

So we get home, unbox the cake and cut ourselves a nice healthy slice each. We then sit down, and take a taste. Before we get to my opinion, here’s what my lady had to say -

“It’s nice.. it’s like a cinnamon-y cake with a banana flavor with crumb topping.. Sal’s onto something”

Boy, WAS he on to something with this cake! This cake is one of the finer cakes I’ve tasted in a while! It was so good, so banana-ey, crunchy and like my lady said cinnamon-ey! It was a mouthful of chewy, cakey goodness that anyone dare not speak ill of, before they get banished and shunned from society for hating on a holy grail of human confectionary creation!

In other words, it was good. Thanks, Sal… your cakes should be at your house on Saturday. ENJOY!
