Like a Boss

As I currently lay in bed, I wonder what my next post should be. Hot off the heels of a gangbuster show tonight, I wonder what next weeks show will be like. The mind of a boss never falters, as he always ponders what’s next. I will say this, I am highly jealous of Sal getting banana crunch cakes in the mail. Now as I write this, I realize this post has no meaning.. Just tired ramblings from the owner, the CEO and your one true god. Yeah, right.. I’m going to get some sleep.. Having this WordPress app is just asking for trouble…

EDGE FM Talks!

Beginning this past Monday, you might have noticed a new profile picture on our Facebook and Twitter accounts.. as well as status updates with the last few words saying ‘EDGE FM Talks’. You might have wondered, ‘What’s that about?’ Quite simply, it’s our new campaign to push that EDGE FM is different than the other plethora of stations around the web.

We are obviously a talk station… we have been since April 2008 and will remain so for as long as possible. Since the format change back in 2008 to around-the-clock talk, we have been a very strong source for talk programming with a taste of something for everybody. We’ve had shows on the station ranging from male-oriented talk/hot talk, relationship talk, sports talk, random/news-related talk and more.

EDGE FM is centered on focusing about talk that people of all demographics can relate to in some form. It doesn’t necessarily have to be raunchy or ‘over the top’ to be good talk radio. Radio is (and should always be) in my opinion ‘theater of the mind’. Creating that spark with the audience using just the human voice is a talent that in my opinion has been lost over the past decade or so in radio. People have been too much relying on visual aids to connect with the audience, picking fights with other people/shows/stations, or overloading on social media such as Facebook or Twitter and the magic of radio has been lost. Creating the audience connection using purely voice is a craft, and with the Internet having such untapped potential for radio in a new form, maybe it’s time to return to the roots of radio.

In essence, the ‘EDGE FM talks’ slogan is a reflection upon who we are as a station and my outlook toward the future. We are YOUR Internet talk station and while I’m not speaking for all of the shows, it is my goal to run a station that once more can create that spark with the listener. Even if it’s just through one show.

We are the place where talk lives, and talking is what we do, better than anyone else in my opinion. We hope you feel the same way. Thanks for listening to our station and checking out our programming. To tweak the title of a David Essex song…

Talk On.

101.9 FM New… what’s going on?

As an update to the whole situation with 101.9 FM in NYC, not much has changed since my post over the weekend. As of Friday at 5pm, the RXP rock format left the airwaves and continues to ‘rock’ (if that’s what you want to call it) at 1019rxp.com. The FM signal however, took a format change. To be more specific, the station is currently ‘stunting’ (radio jargon for ‘filler programming until the real format is ready for air’).

However, the stunting has been interesting (to us radio dorks, anyway). With all of the rumors that 101.9 FM will be flipping to a female-oriented FM talk station, the current format on the air has been leaning to that in an odd way. After flipping the switch last Friday at 5pm eastern, 101.9 has been playing a very tight-playlisted rock leaning Modern AC format of music (artists such as Nickelback, REO Speedwagon, Journey, Jason Mraz, Sugar Ray, Eddie Money, Bruce Springsteen, Rick Springfield, to name a few) interspliced with soundbytes of women identifying the station as ’101-9 FM New’ and talking about womenly things (shoes, their families, kids, and even chocolate) as well as a few jingles tossed in for good measure. While the music has been pretty good (to me, anyway) providing a nice variety, the soundbytes have been a bit puzzling. Is 101.9 making fun of AC-based stations such as Fresh 102.7 and 106.7 Lite FM, or is it a hint of what’s to come… OR, are the new owners at Merlin Media just putting up a smokescreen to throw us in an entirely different direction with the new format?

LISTEN TO THE CHANGE FROM RXP TO ’101.9 FM New’ at FormatChange.com!
(Right click and save the .mp3 file, streaming didn’t work for me)

To be honest, any of those questions could be valid. It’s been interesting that a few former news people from area news talk stations have been hired by Merlin, to be part of the new format at 101.9. All bets are on some form of news/talk hybrid coming to the dial with a younger approach than what’s on AM. The rumors have also been speculating that the new format at 101.9 will be similar to what’s on the air at NJ101.5. Some of the people in charge of the new 101.9 have previously worked at NJ101.5, helping to lead some credence to those rumors.

Whatever is going to happen is still up in the air. No one is talking, but everyone on the Internet has their opinions. Ideas, opinions and rumors have been running rampant on the various radio trade sites, message boards and other spots on the Internet. Officially, nothing is concrete… but in the end, that’s one thing that’s for sure about radio… is that NOTHING is for sure.

I’ll be posting more about the situation as 101.9 FM in NYC as things happen, so stay tuned.

Rebecca Black is Back

Enough said with that title… just listen for yourself. Basically, if you don’t know who Rebecca Black is.. she’s a young teen girl that can’t sing, but she tried to and suffered ridicule worldwide for her lack of talent. She basically has become another Internet trend because of her first song titled ‘Friday’. She has a new song out called ‘My Moment’ and the thing is, this song is a lot better than her previous single ‘Friday’. Here, I don’t even need to talk… listen -

If you have been in a coma or not ‘hip’ to pop culture recently and missed her previous song ‘Friday’, let me also embed that gem of music so you can familiarize yourself and get up to speed..

…AND, Katy Perry was so nice as to feature Black as a cameo in her newest single ‘Last Friday Night (TGIF)’… want the video for that one as well? SURE!
(HINT: she’s the girl that answers the door for Katy at the beginning of the video)

Ummmmm, damn…

Can someone get me the trainer or regimen that Jonah Hill took, because I need to lose about 40 pounds just like he did… if you’re curious why he did it, it was mostly for his upcoming spot in the 21 Jump Street movie… and you know, because he also wanted to be healthier.

I need whatever he did… seriously. Jonah, call me and let me know.. okay?

Jonah Hill

…Seriously, CALL ME!!!

Good riddance, 101.9 RXP!

What a piece of trash for a rock station it was… for the past 3.5 years, 101.9 FM in New York City was a ‘contempory rock’/'AAA’ format. From the beginning, the station had no clue in direction. They played old rock, new rock and tried to position themselves as ‘NY’s Rock Experience’. What a crock of shit.

Finally after 3 years of hearing bands I’ve never heard of and don’t care for when I flip to the station for a rock fix (Vampire Weekend? Mumford and Sons? Vivabrother? Interpol? WHO THE FUCK?), the station is finally moving on to a newer (and more ambitious) venture. After Emmis Communications sold off 101.9 to Merlin Media earlier this summer, it was highly speculated that a format change would be coming. Pardon the pun, but that news was ‘music’ to my ears. Merlin will be flipping 101.9 to a female-leaning news/talk format later this summer. Here’s a quick quote from the NY Daily News -

WRXP (101.9 FM), which switched from smooth jazz to rock in February 2008, is being sold by Emmis to Merlin Media, and while the deal hasn’t closed yet, Merlin takes over the programming Friday.

Listeners will hear music for a couple of weeks until Merlin launches its new format, expected to be all or mostly news targeting women in their 30s and 40s.

On the surface, this change might seem to again support the often-heard mantra that when it comes to radio music, New York is a rhythm town, not a rock town.

The call letters at 101.9 are also expected to be changed to WYNY and the URL 1019wyny.com has been purchased by Merlin Media and is currently parked by GoDaddy.

For the rock fans, I don’t know what to say. Rock deserves to live in NYC, just like it’s heyday back in the 70s when 102.7 was WNEW… but it seems the crap that’s being called rock that spewing out of the record labels these days just can’t cut it in the big city that never sleeps. If you’re looking for 92.3 to flip back to K-ROCK anytime soon, don’t bet on that either. 92.3 NOW as a CHR/Top-40 format currently has the highest cume of listeners since the late 90′s when it was K-ROCK with Howard Stern in mornings. Q104 is currently the only place in NYC to hear rock on terrestrial radio, and you know what? With rock sounding the way it does today, that may be the perfect thing to happen.

I’d love to tell you what’s on the air at 101.9 right now but I’m not near a radio… going to RXP’s website takes you to their online stream where their ‘rock experience’ is still going on. I’ll be looking forward to news/talk on the FM dial, especially a nice change from the heavy stuff you hear on AM’s talk stations.

I’d post more right now, but I’ve got to get some sleep for work in the morning. I’ll make more postings in the coming days and report on more radio news. Enjoy, folks.

EDGE FM recommends TuneIn Radio

As you may have noticed, we’ve been sprucing up the site a bit. Moving things around, tweaking things and just giving a bit of polish to what’s around the site. We also just took the opportunity to slim down our mobile listening page a bit. Rather than break down how to listen by platform, we gave a one-size-fits-all solution so things are less confusing.

As you may have heard on the different shows here on EDGE FM (like the Mike & Sal Show), all of us here highly recommend the ‘TuneIn Radio’ app. It’s freely available for the many smartphone platforms currently out on the market (Windows Phone 7, Android, etc.) as well as most of the Internet TV recievers people use at home (Roku, Google TV, etc.).

The app has the same interface across most of the platforms, making it simple to pick up and use. It also houses THOUSANDS of radio stations from all over the world. AM/FM/HD and Internet stations are easy to find, all through this one app. Rather than having SEPERATE apps for different radio stations (ex. iHeartRadio, Radio.com, etc.), TuneIn makes most of those stations centrally available through it’s app! Like we said earlier, it’s also a FREE app, there is no cost to use the app (aside from the monthly cost of the data plan for your smartphone).

We’re not getting paid to promote this app (yet! *wink*), we just think it’s a great way to enjoy traditional radio and Internet radio all through one easy-to-use application that’s available for most devices out on the market.

OH, and did we mention… you can also use TuneIn’s website to listen to the same stations right through your desktop browser! Whether you use Internet Explorer, Firefox, Google Chrome or Opera, you can listen to stations from around the world without having to remember individual site URLs. Just go right to tunein.com!

Microsoft buys Skype

Before anyone gets their pantywaists in a bunch, look at things this way. Outside of companies like Cisco running the hardware/software combinations in the IP/telephone space, who is THE MAJOR NAME in the Internet phone world? Skype. Microsoft knows this, and with Ebay having wanted to sell off Skype for a while now, it seems like the only buyer with any good reason to buy has stepped up. Other key potential buyers included Facebook (WHY?) and Google (it would make sense for them as well, buy they already have a client ‘Google Talk’ which has failed to gain any footing). This deal is about one thing… simply to keep Skype out of the hands of competitors like Facebook and Google. The next thing you might be asking yourself is the price… $8.5 billion in straight cash. Does it make sense? Why yes, it does. Skype has a whole, the branding, VoIP technology, customer base, and quite simply the *possibilities* behind the acquisition far make it worth the investment. This is also one of Microsoft’s biggest acquisitions in it’s history as a company.

So where does Skype go from here? Earlier today as officially announced by Skype/Microsoft – (quote courtesy of Neowin.net)

Microsoft plans to use Skype, which has 170 million registered users, for many of its products, saying in its press release, “Skype will support Microsoft devices like Xbox and Kinect, Windows Phone and a wide array of Windows devices, and Microsoft will connect Skype users with Lync, Outlook, Xbox Live and other communities.” Microsoft will continue to invest in and support Skype clients on non-Microsoft platforms.” The deal will turn Skype into its own division inside of Microsoft. Skype’s current CEO Skype Tony Bates will be the president of the new Microsoft Skype Division and will report directly to Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. Ballmer is quoted in the press release as saying, ““Tony Bates has a great track record as a leader and will strengthen the Microsoft management team. I’m looking forward to Skype’s talented global workforce bringing its insights, ideas and experience to Microsoft.”

Skype will continue to operate as its own unit within Microsoft. They won’t be absorbed into any other unit as previously feared. Microsoft will continue to (for now) support Skype for non-Microsoft platforms (Android, Mac OS/iOS, GNU/Linux, etc.) as well.

The exciting part of this deal is the opportunity to integrate Skype’s technologies with Microsoft’s business and consumer products as they mentioned in that quote. Skype could be integrated into Microsoft’s Windows Live Messenger program, or on your Xbox or Windows Phone having Skype integrated at the system level rather than an individual application would create a very seamless experience. For enterprise products such as Lync or Outlook, it would be a very similar situation of seamless integration unmatched by other companies with competing products.

With Microsoft’s EU Antitrust shackles to come off later this month, it will definitely be an interesting time for Microsoft. Having been shackled with restrictions by their EU Antitrust ruling, they’ve become less of the powerhouse they were in the 90s. It’s time for Microsoft to deliver that heat to the competition once again, and I think the purchase of Skype is one of the big moves to start that fire once again. With Microsoft’s blockbuster releases of Windows 7, Xbox 360/Kinect, Internet Explorer 9 and other stellar products, the future is looking good.

Alex Jones: Bin Laden Death Hoax Exposed [Video]

A video I came across a few moments ago featuring Alex Jones breaking thru the BS and giving his rationale as to why the recent outing of Bin Laden’s death really is bullshit. A lot of what he says (in my opinion) makes sense… and it retells some of what I’ve personally believed for a couple of years now.

Watch his video and form your own opinion.. it’s all right there.
